Sumatra cannot offer the same visibility underwater found at other dive sites in Indonesia. But the marine life and closeness to Singapore make up for that. On the west coast lies the Indian Ocean, which leads to a slightly different distribution of marine life than elsewhere. The Indian Ocean also brings rough conditions, so the best diving is found in the shelter of smaller islands such as Pulau Weh on the northwestern coast. There are many undiscovered dive locations around Sumatra as well as better known ones, where encounters with big pelagics are more often.
