South Siam 3 - Similan Islands and Richelieu Rock

South Siam 3 runs twice weekly 3 day / 2 night trips to the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Surin islands and Richelieu Rock. Divers can make a longer trip by starting on the right day (ask us for details - see more information and prices below). The South Siam boats are low budget options but are about the only option for a short 2 night trip that includes the amazing Richelieu Rock. 2 day / 1 night trips are possible starting most days with diving at the Similan Islands and Koh Bon. Overnight trips do not include Tachai or Richelieu Rock. Trips begin almost any day during the high season (late October - early May), but if you want a 3 day / 2 night trips including Richelieu then you must start on Wednesdays or Sundays (South Siam 3) or Saturday or Tuesday (South Siam 4). The South Siam 3 and South Siam 4 boats are built to almost the same design, sleeping 28 guests maximum. The boats can be crowded on some days as there may also be day trippers on board.

South Siam 3 Liveaboard Information

South Siam 3 and sister ship South Siam 4 are low budget Thailand liveaboards, both sleeping a maximum of 28 guests with on board accommodation in twin or double air-conditioned cabins, using shared bathrooms. The upper deck has a big shaded open air seating area where all the on board meals are served, plus a smaller indoor air-con saloon where you find a TV and DVD. On the top deck of South Siam 3 there’s a large sun deck.

The South Siam boats are your option for a lower price, short trip that includes the same dive sites normally visited by other liveaboards in 4 – 5 days. There are trips as short as 3 days / 2 nights which include the Similan Islands, Bon and Tachai Islands and Richelieu Rock or you can just do an overnight trip with 7 dives in the Similan islands.

The trips on South Siam 3 or South Siam 4 start with early pick up from hotels in Phuket between 06:00 – 06:30. There is minibus transfer to the port of Thap Lamu, which is around 2 hours drive north from our home at Karon Beach. Breakfast is available at the port on departure day before boarding the speedboat, usually just some toast and coffee, you may want to bring something with you to eat on the minibus ride. At the port you meet a speedboat for a further 90 minute dash to the Similan Islands to join one of the South Siam boats. Yes it’s quite a long transfer! We suggest you consider staying in Khao Lak, which is just a few km north of Thap Lamu port. Then you have hotel pick up about 7:45am, and a much easier day!

The last day of a trip with the South Siam boats includes 3 dives at the Similan islands and / or Koh Bon island, followed by the speedboat and minibus transfer again – you can expect to be back in Khao Lak by 4:30pm and back in Phuket by 6:30 – 7pm.

Note that this boat unlike most other liveaboards, does not provide towels, please bring a towel with you.

PLEASE NOTE that at busy times the boat is likely to be crowded – day trippers can join some days on these boats. You have up to 28 guests sleeping on the boat, but on changeover days there are new divers arriving and during the middle part of the day, with some day trippers too there can sometimes be 50+ divers. The boat is generally very well organised, but some people may find it a little too busy. If you want a quiet boat, this will probably not suit you. Divers booking on the South Siam boats must have Advanced Open Water certification or Open Water with at least 20-30 dives and have dived in the last year. Divers with less experience or who have not dived for a long time may be able to join, but will need to pay extra for a private divemaster.

All divemasters on the boat are working for the boat – we send private guides if divers are less experienced or on request (2000 Baht per day).

South Siam Schedule

Overnight (2 day/1 night) trips can start on one of the 2 boats on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. if you start Tuesday or Saturday, the diving will include Koh Bon. Other days are in the Similan islands only. 3 day / 2 night trips including the Similan islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock can start Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday. 3 day/2 night trips including only the Similan Islands are possible starting Thursday or Friday. 4 day / 3 night trips you can start any day except Thursday.

Diving Equipment

Rental equipment is provided by Sunrise Divers for our divers on the South Siam liveaboard. Rental price is 500 Baht per day for a set (BCD/regulator/fins/mask/wetsuit) and 250 Baht per day for a dive computer. We have a large equipment room at our dive center with 30 sets of Aqualung BCDs and regulators and a large selection of long and short wetsuits, open heel and full foot fins.

If you need to rent equipment we suggest you meet at our dive center at least 1 day before departure day, so you can try all equipment before departure. We can’t arrange on departure day because these trips have early morning pick up starting 6am, so all equipment is prepared the day before. If not possible to meet at our shop, no problem, we will pack extra equipment in different sizes.

Torches for night dives, no charge. 15 liter tanks available 300 Baht per day.

Nitrox is not blended on the boat, but if you want to dive Nitrox you can order in advance, price 300 Baht per 12 liter fill. Tanks have to be carried to the boat from the mainland by speedboat.

PADI Advanced Open Water course is 8,500 Baht. PADI Enriched Air (Nitrox) course is 8,500 Baht.

Drinking water, coffee, tea and sodas are included. Beers are 50 Baht.
